TBS’s “Mapolong Kita” Listener Meetup for 100 Fans Showcasing the Vibrant Charisma of Taiwan’s Indigenous Peoples

Taipei Broadcasting Station organized the “Mapolong Kita” this afternoon (September 7th), co-hosted by a strong lineup of program hosts including Ming-Te Li, Cihek Dongi, Caciu, and Wu Sai. In addition to traditional songs and dances, the event also featured unique nose flute music, attracting close to 100 listeners. Indigenous Peoples Commission Chairperson Bakan Pawan also attended the event to celebrate with the audience and show her care and support for the indigenous peoples. The event saw lively interactions that truly embodied the passion and vigor of indigenous peoples.

According to TBS, the listener meetup is inspired by the theme of indigenous culture, and the name “Mapolong Kita” is “Getting Together” in the Amis language. Through dance and music, the audience is invited to enjoy a good time with the hosts and bring everyone’s hearts together, thereby demonstrating the companionship and comforting qualities of radio.

The event opened with an energetic performance of “Amis Cha-Cha (阿美恰恰)” by the Fata’an Youth Group from Hualien County. Folk singer idol Ming-Te Li staged a live performance of classic Amis songs such as “The Maiden of Malan (馬蘭姑娘)” and “Just Like Your Tenderness (恰似你的溫柔),” while playing the guitar. The enthusiastic interactions between the performers and the audience engendered an exhilarating ambiance.

Paiwan nose flute virtuoso Paljaljim Valengelan delivered a mesmerizing rendition of “Vuvu’s Fantasia (vuvu的幻想曲),” showcasing intricate and refined melodies that immersed the audience in the tranquil and melodious realm of Paiwan traditional music. The Sawali Music Band also presented reimagined renditions of popular Mandarin songs such as “Tian Mi Mi (甜蜜蜜)” and “Too Late (遲到)” in the Amis language, seamlessly merging indigenous language with mainstream culture. This musical presentation elevated the occasion into a cultural fête, allowing urban Taipei’s listeners to partake in the vibrant diversity of indigenous culture.

Members of the audience zealously shared their feedback, expressing how they were enchanted by listening to their first traditional nose flute performance. Amis listeners who attended the function with their children commented that the event offered a rare opportunity for their children to learn about their indigenous heritage. Other listeners mentioned that the audience usually only hears the host’s voice on the radio, and they were thrilled to be able to engage with the hosts in person to experience their charm.

TBS Deputy Station Director Pei-Wei Lee noted that TBS has a dedicated indigenous channel, AM 1134, which produces high-quality indigenous programs such as Taipei Indigenous Life, Masakayingay a ina, Aboriginal Taipei, Welcome to Wasal, and Reading in Forest. These programs explore the stories, folklore, and literary creations of indigenous peoples, resonating with the listeners. The listener meetup is not merely an exchange of emotions with indigenous friends but also creates an opportunity for the general audience to experience and appreciate the charisma of Taiwan’s indigenous cultures.
